"These etchings have developed from details of clothing repair marks. Having spent new found time mending worn out fabrics I became interested in Sashiko, a type of Japanese hand stitching used to reinforce or patch clothing around points of wear. The titles of the work are a poetic reference to the names given to common Sashiko patterns.
There’s a rhythm and tactility to stitching that resonates in the process of etching. The black areas in my prints are made by brushing away aquatint on the copper plate before being fused and etched in acid. The process is methodical and absorbing, and I want the compositions to offer a solid ground; a place to find stillness."
