Born in Cornwall, the artist Hannah Ludnow looks to Cornish coastlines, light, and the relationship between emotion and memory to create her abstracted paintings and collaged lino cut relief prints. Each piece aims to bring a sense of peace and tranquillity to both the viewer and the space in which it resides.

Reflecting on the abstracted nature of memory, in which fine detail is often replaced with shapes, line, curves and feelings, her Connections series is based on such recollections; the soft reflections and glimpses against strong shape and line. The connecting elements of shape and colour sit together in harmony to create a sense of calm. Each painting begins as a drawing, endless sketches exploring symbiotic relationships with shape. These are then are recreated in collage to explore colour relationships, and eventually translated into large oil paintings.

Inspired by cartography, her lino cuts too are deeply rooted in landscape. Evoking the flowing channels of rivers and mountains against the straight geometric arrangement of ley lines, each composition is made up from several sections printed onto antique papers, pared back through simple shape and block colour. Once Hannah feels the composition evokes a sense of unity, calm and harmony, the composition is complete; “they become sculptural, have balance and a sense of completion.”
