The geo-abstract paintings of Julian Brown are heavily influenced by nostalgic visions that entangle a colourful 1980s aesthetic, and the folk art of his mother’s Polish heritage. He describes the ‘handmade geometric quality’ of these influences as having ‘a playful and primitive relevance to the world we now live in’.
Navigating this heady nostalgia, Julian’s works find poise between order and chaos, structure and
collapse, expression and control. Motifs of floating boats, crescent moons, and falling leaves spill out of his subconscious, steadied by the web of a predetermined grid that underpins his compositions.
In his works on paper, ribbons of translucent watercolour sail across the surface like refracting beams of light, punctuated by portals into worlds unknown. Across his bodies of work Julian locates subtle points of tranquillity amidst a carnival of colour and form.
